Ancash. Yungay, Peru, 31 May 1970
Description: Ancash avalanche, also known as the Great Peruvian
Earthquake occurred on May 31, 1970. The center (or epicenter) of the
earthquake was 35 km off the coast of Casma and Chimbote. An estimate of 20,000
casualties are reported. The avalanche occurred due to the walls of the
mountain becoming compromised from the earthquake, it sent sheets of snow, rock
and glacial ice (3,000 feet (910 m) wide and one
mile (1.6 km) long) It
moved about 11 km into the city of Yungay.
Impact:
The disaster claimed 20,000 lives but could have been an upwards of 70,000 as
well as a substantial amount of damage. It completely buried the town of Yungay
and Ranrahirca.
Personal
response: I think that they could have
predicted the earthquake due to today’s seismology technology, but the
avalanche managed to break down an entire mountain, which was a horrible event
that I don’t think could have been stopped or predicted. In 1960 Vlado
Kapetinovic wrote a paper regarding the events of a gigantic avalanche from Huascaran.
He basically predicted the arrival of the Ancash landslide, nearly 10 years
prior to the disaster so I think with that bit of knowledge or suspicion if you will, that someone could have made an educated guess from the clues that corresponded with Vlados hypothesis.
